The popularity of the manga version of GTO prompted Fuji
TV Network to make a drama series based loosely on the manga,
a feat that only a few Japanese manga can do, notably the
manga Itazurana Kiss and The Jikembo of Young Kindaichi (Kindaichi
Shonen No Jikembo). Even that there's a lot of differences
between the manga and the drama's script, the drama still
managed to become one of the most watched drama series, and
also become the winner of the Best Drama award for the year
1998. Not to mention that it also spawned a movie version.
